Several answers to questions about our Safe Piloting course.
Who is the basic course for
Statistics say that most of the injuries on landings get not swoopers at all, but ordinary parachutists. The very ones that are usually talked about – neat, careful, not a “reckless driver” (swoopers break, albeit more spectacularly, but less often).
There are 2 main prerequisites for injuries to ordinary skydivers:
- The parachutist has problems with landing (in simple words, he makes a mistake with a landing flare).
- Or the skydiver has trouble landing at a safe, predetermined location (landing accuracy).
We will discuss them in more detail below.
What the basic course consists of
Since our AFF training, we have been told about the landing flare: a properly executed flare slows down our speed and makes landing more comfortable.
But! Thanks to the development and excellent qualities of modern parachutes – even an incorrectly made flare (too early, too late, not completely, etc.) – leaves us with the opportunity to leave the landing place with impunity. And for a while, a young skydiver, indeed, can do everything: the flare is not very good, but the canopy is still large, or the load is low enough, and the result is still not bad (well, we are leaving the landing area on our own feet, what else it is necessary for happiness). This is especially true for little girls – who, due to their low weight – can survive with a very, very bad flare.
In the absence of quick feedback (poor cushion = pain), poor flare performance can become a bad habit, forming a faulty skill. And we begin to believe that our bad flare is actually very good, as we already have 50-100-200 jumps, which ended successfully.
But sooner or later, we either start to increase the speed, or increase the load, or we encounter a particularly unfortunate bump, or we are distracted on landing – and our bad airbag leads to a landing at an increased speed, and as a result – to injury.
Accordingly, learning the correct execution of the flare is the key to your long and safe jumps. And – the first part of our basic course.
Parachute Landing Accuracy
Again, statistics tell us that quite rarely there is a situation when an skt=ydiver, who always flew to the right place, suddenly flies away into a distant area, and finds a lonely pillar there.
In practice, it usually happens that the athlete has always had problems with landing. He always “flew all over the sky” and expertly “landed on the working area of the airfield.” And very often such skydivers jump for a long time, serving as the object of jokes. But, since the skydiver himself does not consider this a particularly big problem – “well, I landed safely” – a bad habit takes root. And only a matter of time, when a small additional input: an error with an ejection, a new site of a smaller size, or more than usual, the number of people at the entrance – leads to the fact that a person flies away somewhere – and either crashes into a lonely building, or it pilots sharply, trying not to hit it – and as a result, it hits the planet painfully.
Therefore, the competent construction of the skydiver approach and precise landing in the chosen place is the second part of our basic course.
When will we learn to swoop
After you land 8 out of 10 times comfortably in a circle with a radius of 10 meters. This will be an indicator that you have mastered the skill of the flare and the skill of building the approach correctly. And only now – you can add speed to your canopy.

Improper mastering of basic skills already indicates that the brain’s resources are not enough to process the incoming information. And, already having a resource shortage, we increase the speed, which in itself requires more resources. As a result, the brain begins to cut off “unimportant” tasks in order to free up at least some of the resources necessary to cope with the increased speed. In the best case, we manage to save ourselves for some time without getting injured (we are not talking about improving the skill – here the question is how to remain safe and sound). At worst, discretion can be included on the list of “unimportant” tasks. And in this case, the result may be even worse.
Therefore – we perform the basic test – we move on. If we don’t do it, we learn basic skills. We do not want to waste time on this boring thing – you are going to find another course.
When will be a theoretical lesson
Dozens of piloting courses held showed that the topics requiring discussion with young skydivers in the piloting section – 100,500 pieces. Everyone learns from different instructors. For different programs. With varying degrees of assimilation. With different prior experiences. Etc.

Therefore, in our courses we start from the other side: students perform several jumps, from 1500 meters, to demonstrate their skills and abilities. These “greenhouse” conditions allow the student to unleash his full flying potential. And they deprive him of all chances to say “I was cut off”, “I was badly thrown out of the plane.” We shoot several entries on camera, analyze them in the evening. And only after that, we cut an individual training program for each student.
Someone has problems with building an landing approach, and you need to look for reasons and select solutions. For example, you need to spend time navigating and planning. Another person makes flare in one jerk, like throwing a grenade – because he has no idea what processes are taking place with the dome at the same time. And we need to talk about aerodynamics.
And already based on the results of such analyzes, we get a lesson plan and the topics necessary for working out.
